Neta Jackson

Dear Readers,
Come to the Table by Neta Jackson is the second in the SoldOut Sisters series.  Once again Neta takes us to Chicago on a journey of hope and promise.  Believe it or not, even though I have never lived in Chicago these books have a way of making me feel like I have come home again.
Come to the Table, Neta JacksonKat Davis is still struggling with her desire to share good eating habits with the families of the neighborhood.  Others understand what she is trying to say, but they also feel that Kat has no idea what it is like to live on food stamps, in a single parent home or why the quick and easy isn't the best choice for them.  Edesa tries gently to push her in the right direction with some very interesting results.
I waited until vacation to read this book because it is just so fun to visit with old friends while relaxing.  Avis from Yada Yada prayer group factors in this series and so we have a time to visit with the Yadas again.  Of course you go back to visit the House of Hope and the Manna House also.  That way you can touch base with many of our favorite characters and see how they are all doing.
I am sure there is not anything new I can say about this series or any of the books that are included in any of the series that Neta has written.  They are good gentle reads.  They include a good deal of real life and yet offer answers and hope.  They are just, as I said before, a coming home.

Neta Jackson

Dear Readers,
Here is a review I almost didn't write and it had nothing to do with whether I liked the book or not.  In fact I loved the book Who is my Shelter by Neta Jackson.  This is where the problem lies.  If you have read my blog at all you know I love Neta's book and have since I started reading the Yada Yada Prayer Group books.  So do I write you another review singing the praises of the book, or not.
There is the other problem  Those of you that know me and talk to me know that I don't usually write negative reviews and if you know I read a book and don't see a review then I probably didn't like it.  I most certainly didn't want you to think that about this book.
So instead I am just going to say I really really liked this book and if you have read her other books and liked them you will like this one.  All our favorite characters are back and once again living lives that can be very similiar to our own and learning lessons we all need to learn.
Take time waiting for spring to arrive and enjoy a visit with some dear friends.

Neta Jackson

Dear Readers,
I don't think there are any more adjectives I could use to describe the Neta Jackson books. I have loved every one of them. Who do I lean on is the third in the House of Hope series. Once again Gabby is trying to get on her feet after her husband kicked her and her mother out on to the street. She has found an apartment for herself and her boys and it looks like her dream of a house for homeless mothers will soon become a reality. But now Philip says he wants to talk about the damage done to their marriage and Gabby wonders if that means he wants to reconcile.
Is Gabby interested in letting him back into her life? Does she trust him? What about the strange men hanging out by his condo? Gabby is moving ahead. Her life isn't completely back together and she is learning as she goes along. She learns that friendship means give and take, not just take. She also learns that ex-husbands, ok not yet, but... don't always co-operate the way she thinks he should. What about what Mabel told her, does she carry some of the blame for their mariage breaking up?
I always feel like I have come home again when I read one of Neta's books. I don't live in a big city, but the people in her stories make me feel at home. They are very welcoming and I know that if I were to join one of their groups they would welcome me with open arms and accept me, even with all my faults. They love each other threw it all, but are unwilling to let anyone get away with anything they think may endanger their walk with God. What a neat group of woman to belong to.
The books in the House of Hope series and the Yada Yada Prayer group series are those kind of  books that I love to read and just sink into and just disappear for a while.   It is a great way to enjoy the heat of summer and yet feel like you did something special.

Neta Jackson

Dear Readers,

My favorite group of ladies is back. I know in the House of Hope series the Yada Yada's are not the main characters, but they are involved enough to keep in touch.

Who Do I Talk To? by Neta Jackson is #2 in the House of Hope series and it picks up right where book #1, Where Do I Go? leaves off. Our new favorite Heroine, Gabby Fairbanks, is trying to recover from losing her home, helping her mom and restarting her job at Manna House. All while trying to come to grips with being homeless and maybe heading for a divorce.

Gabby can't seem to get over the feeling of "this is not suppose to happen to me." She is so focused on getting her boys back that maybe she is taking bad advice. Does she need a different job? What about her mom and her dog. They don't belong in a homeless shelter either.

All our favorite characters are back. Lucy the bag lady, Harry the doorman, his lady friend, Estelle and of course Dandy the dog. They are the reasons that I love the books. They are all very real and I feel like I could just start visiting with them at any time.

I know I have said this before, but if you haven't read any of Neta Jackson's books, give them a try and become a Yada Yada Prayer Group member. I know they will welcome you with open arms and make you one of the group.

Neta Jackson

Dear Readers,
I was very sad to close the book on the Yada Yada Prayer Group. They were and are some of my most favorite book characters. They were a
group of woman I always felt like I could knock on the door where they were meeting and I would have been welcomed and then fit right in.

Well happy day the newest book by Neta Jackson, Where do I go, is subtitled A Yada Yada House of Hope. I can easily say that if you like the Yada's you will love this book. In fact several of the Yadas show up to help our main character out.

I have to tell you that the main character and my youngest daughter share a first name. I had dinner with Neta and her husband a couple of years ago and Neta asked me about my daughter's, Gabby name. She wanted to know why we called her that and how we spelled it etc... She asked me if it would be ok to use it in a book and I said yes of course. I didn't think about it or even remember that conversation until about 1/2 way through the book when it suddenly dawned on me that this was that book. I am not sure that Neta would even remember that conversation, but that is ok. I know that my daughter was just tickled by it and even read the book.

Ok on to the important stuff now that I have rattled on. :-)

Gabby is not sure she is all that excited about her new life in Chicago. Her sons are still at boarding school and she rattles around in their high rise apartment with nothing to do and no friends. That all changes after she has a close incounter with Lucy a bag lady.

After sending Lucy to the Manna House, Gabby desides to check on her to make sure she is ok. The rest is all part of the story. She learns there are many reasons for women to be homeless, not just because of drugs or alcohol. Sometimes it is curcumstances beyond their control. As Gabby falls more and more in love with the woman of Manna House, her husband becomes more and more upset about her job. Things really start falling apart when the boys come home. Add a new dog and Gabby loses all control.

I felt this is a bit darker book than I thought any of the Yada books were. Maybe darker isn't the correct word, but it just seems that this book doesn't have the lightness and joy that the Yada's do. Not a bad thing, just different. It also ends in a way that will make you want to either throw the book out the window or go find Neta and insist that she tell you what happens. :-)

I really enjoyed this book. It is a book that really opened my eyes to how sometimes people become homeless because of something that really has nothing to do with them. It does give you an understanding that the women at these shelters are still just women trying to take care of their families as best they can. Sometimes that just means needing help. I know I was with Gabby the first time someone makes a suggestion that they offer "fun" classes as well as ones that will help the ladies find jobs. Everyone needs to have fun no matter who you are or what you circumstances in life are.

So to put it simply if you liked the Yada Yada books read this one. If you haven't read them yet, you can easily start here and find a whole new group of friends you will want to share a cup of coffee with.
