Sovereign - Ted Dekker/Tosca Lee

Dear Readers,

Sometimes I put off reading a book by a favorite author for various reasons.  With Sovereign by Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee it was I wanted the time to read it and just enjoy it.  I was planning on reading it during a vacation, but instead it got knocked to the bottom of the pile and (regrettably) I forgot about it.

Thankfully the paperback version hit the shelves a couple of weeks ago and reminded me that I really wanted to read the conclusion to the Books of the Immortal series.

The Sovereign are dying.  Their numbers have dwindled to a mere 30 survivors and they hide in the catacombs below the city.  They fight for food and survival from the Dark Blood and the Immortals.  Neither group wants them to live and will kill one on sight.  They have learned to use their wits and struggle to hold on to their faith in Jonathan.

When alchemist, Mattius, discovers a virus that will kill the Dark Bloods and Immortals but spare the Sovereign, some see it as a gift from Jonathan and others see it as no better than the original virus that rid the world of emotions so many years ago.

I won't go into too many details as I figure most of you that like Ted and Tosca's series have long ago read it, but I still wanted to let you know that if you haven't read it it is well worth the read.  The entire series is interesting and leaves you wondering about what it would be like if we had no emotions and were ruled by fear.

I am also at this time reading Ted's newest release, Outlaw.  That is once again a very different look inside Ted's brain.  He was raised in the jungles of Indochina and because of those experiences he is able to write a book that almost no one else could write.  I will be reviewing the book soon.

Ted Dekker/Tosca Lee

Dear Readers,
Mortal is the don’t miss sequel to Forbidden by Tosca Lee and Ted Dekker.   Both of these authors have been favorites of mine since I read their first books a few years ago.  Ted because of his different way of looking at things and Tosca because of the tough subjects she is willing to take on in her books.
I feel there really isn’t anything else I can say about either one of them that hasn’t already been said by me or someone else.   In this series you do need to read Forbidden to understand what is going on in Mortal.  (Don’t worry it is worth the read.)
In a world ruled by fear, the Mortals have found the way to truly live again.  The blood of the boy Jonathan has saved them all.  They are able to experience all the emotions that go against everything the Order has declared for the cause of Chaos.   But was it Chaos because of emotions or because of evil in the world?
Saric has been brought back by Alchemy and he uses his knowledge to bring the Dark Bloods to life.  He now has an army to rule the world.  He just needs to become Sovereign and he can’t do that if Feyn and/or Jonathan is alive to claim the seat.
This is a good vs. evil book.  But is everything as it seems?   Who can be trusted?  Who is willing to give all to follow Jonathan?  Who is the true Sovereign of the world?
Fast paced, easy to read, Mortal is a wonderful continuation of the Immortal series.

Tosca Lee and Ted Dekker

Dear Readers,
What kind of world would it be if none of us had any emotions but fear?  Fear that if you didn't live correctly you would not get to Bliss in the afterlife.  Fear that if you screw up at work you could be immediately fired.  Fear that if you disobey the Order you could disappear, to never be heard from again.  You don't love your spouse, you just marry because it is expected of you.  You don't love your children, they are just a bi-product of your marriage.   Perfection is craved and less than perfect is gotten rid of.
Forbidden (The Books of Mortals)That is the setting for the first book, Forbidden, in the new series, The Book of the Mortals by Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee.  They are two authors who are among my favorites.  I was so excited to hear they were writing together and could hardly wait to see what they came up with.  Now I already have my order in for book two.
I think I was worried that I would get a cross between the Circle series and Demon, but that is not the case.  Yes it is a fantasy and yes it is a thought provoking book, but it is also very different.  I will have a hard time discribing it without giving something away, so I will be very careful not to.
Rom is leading a very normal life.  He quietly goes about his job of singing at funerals.  He obeys the Order.  He is planning on marrying soon to the woman that he has been paired with.  He just does what is required of him.  Which is easy to do if you have no emotions to mess that up.
That all comes to a screeching hault when an old man chases him into a dark alley one night and thrust a vial into his hands.  Shortly after that Rom watches the man get murdered and his life is turned upside down.
The book leaps off at a running pace and does not slow down.  I was able to read it in one weekend and that is while being quite busy.  So once again Ted shows that he is the master of slight of hand.  With Tosca's help they are very good at keeping everyone guessing.
Happy Reading.
