Jennifer Chiaverini is bringing historical heroines to life in her most recent books. Mrs. Lincoln's Rival is the second book she has written centered around President Lincoln's wife. Who in and of herself was/is a very interesting character.
In this book Jennifer brings to light the rivalry between Mary Todd Lincoln and Kate Chase Sprague. Kate takes over being hostess for her father who has ambitions to the presidency but because he is three times widowed he is at a disadvantage. Kate sees her chance to help her father climb the ladder takes over the job.
Because Salmon P. Chase strives for the presidency, Kate and Mary suddenly become opponents on the drive for the white house. Two women who had much in common and could have been friends find that because of a father and a husband, they can not trust the other.
Strong females that in-spite of society saying that they are the weaker sex and should be home taking care of families are running the country and changing history, they are the ones who are fun to read about. I appreciate Jennifer writing about these woman who are part of America's story.
